Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 must be filed annually by anyone who registers a heavy motor vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more on public highways.
When is Form 2290 Due?
The standard tax period begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 of the following year. Your Form 2290 return is due by August 31 for vehicles first used on the road in July.
What If You Purchase a Vehicle Mid-Year?
If you put a taxable vehicle on the road in any month other than July, you must file Form 2290 by the last day of the month following the month of first use. For example, if you first use a vehicle in October, your deadline is November 30th.
