Form 2290 is the IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) return required for trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more. Filing produces a stamped Schedule 1, which most states require for vehicle registration and DMV tag renewal.
The annual HVUT tax period runs July 1 through June 30. Returns for vehicles in use since July are due by August 31. Vehicles first used later in the year follow a prorated 2290 schedule based on first-used month.
Owner-operators, trucking companies and fleets with 25 or more vehicles are required by the IRS to e-file. Everyone else can e-file for faster processing and a same-day IRS Schedule 1 compared to mailing a paper return.
File a 2290 amendment when a vehicle's taxable gross weight increases or it exceeds the mileage-use limit (5,000 miles, or 7,500 for agricultural vehicles) after your original filing.
Entered a VIN wrong on a prior filing? A 2290 VIN correction fixes it without refiling the entire return or paying tax again.
Tax owed depends on taxable gross weight category (A through V) and whether the vehicle is used for logging. TruckTaxPro calculates your HVUT automatically as you enter each VIN.
