Form 2290 Amendments: Complete Filing Guide
Need to add a vehicle or report a weight increase after filing Form 2290? Amendments allow you to update your HVUT filing and receive a new Schedule 1 with the changes.
✅ When to File Amendment
Weight increase: File within 1 month of increase
Additional vehicle: File by last day of month following first use
Suspended exceeds mileage: File within 1 month of exceeding 5,000 miles
What is a Form 2290 Amendment?
An amendment (also called Form 2290-A) allows you to report:
- Weight increase to a higher tax bracket
- Additional vehicles acquired mid-year
- Suspended vehicles that exceeded mileage limit
You'll receive: Updated Schedule 1 showing the changes and additional tax paid.
When to File an Amendment
Scenario 1: Weight Increase
Situation: You increase your vehicle's taxable gross weight and it moves to a higher tax bracket.
Example:
Original filing: 68,000 lbs = $386 tax
Weight increased to: 80,000 lbs = $550 tax
Additional tax due: $550 - $386 = $164
Deadline: File within 1 month of weight increase
Scenario 2: Additional Vehicle
Situation: You acquire a new vehicle or put a previously unused vehicle into service.
Example:
Purchased new 80,000 lb truck in October
Tax due: Prorated for remaining months (Oct-June = 9 months = 75% of $550 = $412.50)
Deadline: File by November 30 (last day of month following first use)
Scenario 3: Suspended Vehicle Exceeds Mileage
Situation: Vehicle filed as suspended (under 5,000 miles) exceeds the mileage limit.
Example:
Filed as suspended in July, exceeded 5,000 miles in March
Tax due: Prorated for remaining months (April-June = 3 months = 25% of $550 = $137.50)
Deadline: File by April 30 (within 1 month of exceeding limit)
When NOT to File Amendment
You do NOT need to file amendment for:

- ❌ Vehicle sold or destroyed (no amendment needed)
- ❌ VIN error (file VIN correction, not amendment)
- ❌ Business name change (update with IRS separately)
- ❌ Vehicles removed from service (no action needed)

Multiple Amendments
Can you file multiple amendments? Yes!
If you have multiple weight increases or acquire vehicles throughout the year, file a separate amendment each time.
Example timeline:
- July: Original filing (5 trucks)
- October: Amendment #1 (added 2 trucks)
- February: Amendment #2 (weight increase on 1 truck)
- April: Amendment #3 (added 1 truck)
Each amendment generates a new Schedule 1.
