How HVUT Tax is Calculated

Formula for 55,000 - 75,000 lbs:

Tax = $100 + ($22 × thousands of pounds over 55,000)

Example Calculations:

Example 1: 60,000 lb Truck

  1. Weight over 55,000 = 60,000 - 55,000 = 5,000 lbs
  2. Thousands of pounds = 5,000 ÷ 1,000 = 5
  3. Tax = $100 + ($22 × 5) = $100 + $110 = $210

Example 2: 72,000 lb Truck

  1. Weight over 55,000 = 72,000 - 55,000 = 17,000 lbs
  2. Thousands of pounds = 17,000 ÷ 1,000 = 17
  3. Tax = $100 + ($22 × 17) = $100 + $374 = $474

Example 3: 80,000 lb Truck

Any vehicle 75,001 lbs or more pays the maximum: $550
